FOLLOWING / SE SUIVRE
One person follows her pleasure, curiosity, interest, in movement.
Another person goes along, copying everything they do, considering the form of their activity as a portal to their partner's experience.
This score is a practice in empathy which was devised by Jennifer Lacey when creating the performance "Les Assistantes" (premiered 2008), a collaboration with set designer Nadia Lauro. The piece opened up historical and invented models of utopian communities, which Jennifer turned into choreographic structures and performance scores. This one is an adaptation of a vision by which people should never be alone, instead accompany each other in their every activity. This information seems to have come from an internet article (or maybe it was dreamt up) about the 1st iteration of Komune 1 by which they did everything together: gardening, cooking etc. After finding this setup untenable they disbanded and reformed.
Another influence might be a remembered situation in which John Jaspers and Jennifer Monson had been making dance phrases for themselves which made them feel good and then taught them to each other. Jenny thinks this haunted her when she asked us to "do something that makes you feel good".
